In The Spiritual Roots of the Tarot: The Cathar Code Hidden in the Cards, Russell reveals that the Marseille Tarot deck was secretly encoded with the heretical spiritual teachings of the medieval Cathars. By decoding the hidden symbolism within the Major Arcana, the book explains how these cards serve as a "pilgrimage of the soul" rather than a tool for fortune-telling. Ultimately, Sturgess suggests that this ancient Gnostic Christian wisdom is a map of transcendence — a tool designed to help seekers recalibrate human consciousness and achieve inner peace.

This book is the inspiration for the Pathways to Mindfulness mentoring program developed by Russell as well as his more recent program titled, A Map for Transcendence.
