In this presentation, Russell explores the overlooked zigzag symbol beside the Empress in the Marseille Tarot, often called the “zigzag of effulgence” — a sign linked to radiance, sovereignty, and the Supreme. Drawing on medieval symbolism and Renaissance insight, he reveals how this small but powerful detail opens a deeper understanding of the Empress and her spiritual significance.

 

From there, the focus turns to the Fool as a symbol of every human life, and the degree to which a mother, as embodied by the Empress, recognises a child’s (the fools) inherent radiance can either cloud or clarify that awareness. Through the relationship between the Empress, the Popess, and the Emperor, this talk explores how our earliest formation influences whether we grow up remembering our divine nature, or gradually learning to forget it.
